G.S. 1923 (1 Mason, 1927) § 4285, appears to authorize a lump sum settlement only on the basis of a previous award of compensation, payable periodically; and, when such a settlement is made in the absence of an award, it cannot be held that the commission lacked jurisdiction to entertain a petition to set aside the settlement for the purpose of determining whether or not compensation should be paid for subsequently appearing disability.
